ZOMG EPIC SUSHI and Tsukiji Shijo

So months ago when we first began to consider coming to Tokyo, the idea of going to 築地市場-Tsukiji Fish Market was one of the things we immediately began looking forward to. The fish market located next to Tokyo Bay is the largest in the world and brings in fresh fish from all over. The early morning auctions are a tourist attraction as wholesalers and retailers bid for the finest fish. The best tuna are known to go for millions of Yen. We actually were more excited about the wholesale produce they have in Tsukiji and chose to forgo waking up at 5AM today. An entire warehouse is full of little stalls that sell fruit and veggies. The produce here is still a little expensive, but much cheaper than everything else we've seen in Tokyo and also super fresh and delicious looking. Well not everything is cheap; we did see a 6300 Yen ($75) mango. One mango.

The market is also home to the freshest and finest sushi restaurants in existence. We hit up the famous 寿司大-Sushi Dai, one of the longest lines (two hours), for our first ever sushi in Tokyo. The word, epic, merely begins to describe the sushi we ate. I've heard of Sushi Dai being called a sushi mecca, and I will tell you that it is unbelievable how good this sushi was. They offered two set meals, one of which was called the chef's special. We ordered one of each and mixed and matched just a little bit; well, I gave V everything she made googly eyes at. O-toro, suzuki, real tai, uni, shiraebi, anago, the list goes on and on. The chef's special gets to order a piece of their choice at the end, but I had the gall to ask for an extra piece for V, too (I think we paid for it though). So she ended up with her favorite sake and I went for the hotate, scallops, that I saw her devour earlier.

It's funny that whenever the sushi chef told us that the fish was from Hokkaido or Okinawa or anywhere else that made it extra delicious. The miso soup was so good; the green tea was so good. The one other thing that really stood out about our sushi experience was how amazingly fun it was. When you are forced to sit at the sushi bar, joke with the sushi chef, and chat with the other guests it just makes the whole experience that much more enjoyable. The guy in the front was our chef and he was pretty awesome. I will go back again soon. Next time we'll catch the early morning madness, and I'm ordering a sake for my sushi breakfast

In other news, Prospect Axe came through! I will do a giant post about our new home next Wednesday or so when we finally get to move in. I am happily scrambling to wire money and move in ASAP. Say it with me, "Banzai!"
